I was required to go for a walk, my walk must be at least half a mile long. I must then use only type to express this great diversity. My piece should reflect not only my own emotions and feelings but also the environment, architecture, period and colour that is present.
The concept is taking type for a walk, but what i did is that i took type for a walk through the history of the street. By doing that is not only taking the project brief literally but into deep understanding.
The aim of this idea is to make the viewer take a walk through the street in different timelines and have some hint of what has become of this street along the past till today.
I am using “like” newspapers as a frame design to capture the essence of storytelling and taking a walk in chronicle order.

The street has long been associated with the Chinese community of Kuala Lumpur, who came for opportunity to work in the tin business that was flourishing in the late 19th century. In 1870, a civil war erupted between the Cantonese Ghee Hin and the Hakka Hai San societies which were striving to gain control of the tin industry. The British, realizing that the war is disrupting their economy and chain of supply, decided to enter the war. Towards the end, almost all buildings were completely destroyed and the mines were completely filled with water. As a result, food was scarce. The head capitan, Yap Ah Loy, decided to open a Tapioca Mill where tubers were ground into flour for food. Since then, Petaling Street has been the centre of the Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur.

Showing the arrival of the Chinese immigrants and how the story began.
Showing the civil war battles and using red as expressing blood, as well as the pool of blood to show how many died in the war.
As Yap Ah Loy was the capitan of his people he was the one who had major part to build petaling street after the damage of the civil war.
As the covid19 pandemic, the area was closed, and by doing the yellow and black stripes to show there was some construction going to revive the area.
After many many years, somehow the area lost its identity, and using black to show how there is no identity and some comments of Malaysian people on Petaling street.
Choosing Chinese type to show that the identity is back with the red color as an indication of the identity is alive.
